Why it beats that coverage

Flood Switch puts a deep route, a 10-yard out and a shallow flat on the same side against Cover 2 or Cover 3. The switch release separates Y and Z before the routes spread vertically. Roll right, read the outside defender and throw to the open level.

The quarterback’s read

  1. Y deep if the corner squats
  2. Z on the out
  3. X in the flat
  4. Then C

Each player’s job

  • QB: Roll right behind the line of scrimmage. Look deep to Y if the corner squats, then Z on the out, X in the flat and C underneath. The rollout shortens the outside throws, but you must pass before crossing the line.
  • C: Push to 5 yards and turn back slightly left to 4 on the hitch. Face the quarterback and stay ready as the final short option. Keep your route clear of the receivers flooding the right side.
  • X: Widen into the flat after a release at 1.5 yards. Finish near 2.5 yards downfield and keep your shoulders ready for the short pass. Your width pulls the low defender away from the deeper out.
  • Y: Release outside Z, passing through a point 4 yards downfield before climbing toward 18. Run the go route hard. You are the first target when the corner stays low and the deep outside space is open.
  • Z: Release underneath Y, work inside at 4 yards and climb to 10. Break outside from there. Keep the out flat so the quarterback has a clear middle-level target below Y and above X.

When to call Flood Switch

Call it from trips right with 15 yards to the goal line against Cover 2 or Cover 3. You are stretching one side at three different depths. The rollout gives your quarterback a moving view of the flat, out and deep lane.

Watch the outside coverage before asking for the deep throw. A corner staying shallow invites you to check Y beyond that defender. If the deep help carries Y, bring your eyes down to Z and X. Your quarterback should finish the progression in the same outside area without turning back across the field.

Choose a down when your quarterback can reach the rollout point under control. If the rusher gets there early, take the short throw. Throwing while balanced matters more than reaching a particular spot on the sideline.

What stops the flood

A defense can match the three levels with separate defenders and keep the rollout contained. A deep defender over Y, another underneath Z and a flat defender near X close the outside ladder. Work to C if the rush gives you a throwing lane back inside.

If the defense keeps loading the rollout side, call Levels to attack the middle. If man defenders follow the switch tightly, call Center Pivot to make C change direction toward the empty side. Trips Stick gives you a quicker stick-and-flat choice when you need the ball out sooner.

Coaching the switch release

Walk Y and Z through the first 4 yards together. Y goes outside and Z goes underneath. Keep both receivers moving through the exchange. Neither player should stop in a defender’s path or make contact to free the other.

Mark three receiving levels: X shallow, Z at 10 and Y deep. Let the quarterback practise reaching the rollout point, setting the feet and throwing each one. Then add defenders and let their movement decide the target.

Remind your quarterback that rolling right is a passing action. In IFAF 5v5, the quarterback cannot run the ball past the line of scrimmage. Finish with a few fast-rush repetitions so the short flat and center hitch stay part of the play.
